Applications are being requested for outdoor track testing of SmartWay technologies as part of the State of Texas' New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) program. This RFGA solicits the refinement of a drayage vehicle drive cycle and the performance of outdoor track testing utilizing this drive cycle. The project will utilize two tractor/trailer trucks to evaluate the commercialization and emission reduction potentials of specific fuel-saving technologies as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Objectives
The overall objectives of the SmartWay Technologies testing project include:
  • Expedite the commercialization and acceptance of new and innovative emission reduction technologies through 3rd party test track verification.
  • Establish and refine a heavy duty truck drive cycle for test track operation that simulates drayage truck travel through the two major non-attainment areas in Texas.
  • Verify and quantify the fuel economy and NOx emissions reduction for drayage trucks equipped with new and innovative SmartWay technologies.
Deliverables
The project deliverables include:
  • A refined version of the TERC/HARC preliminary drayage drive cycle with refinements to simulate the conditions of trucks traveling from port or rail through the non-attainment areas found in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas.
  • The raw and analyzed data obtained from three valid outdoor test track runs for each of four test segments.
  • Information regarding the SmartWay or "retrofit" technologies installed on the test truck including problems encountered during installation and testing.
