It is anticipated that a total of $250,000 will be awarded for a single project award. Applications are being requested for the proof-of-concept testing of hydrogen enhanced diesel combustion. Many technical solutions are being proposed to add hydrogen to the fuel air mixture in the cylinder of a diesel engine to affect diesel combustion to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. While the literature seems to support the benefits of such a concept, several questions remain:
- What method of hydrogen addition would provide the best balance of cost and benefits?
- What quantity of hydrogen, on an energy or other suitable basis, is required for appreciable benefits, particularly NOx emissions reductions?
- What modifications to the engine or control system, if any, would be needed to get the greatest benefit of a hydrogen enhanced diesel combustion concept?
