The University of Texas (UT) will partner with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and Eastern Research Group (ERG) to conduct the testing of single wide truck tires for the NTRD SmartWay Technologies Test Program. The goal of the project is two-fold: to refine a drayage truck test cycle to specifically represent drayage transportation in and around the Port of Houston, and to use this cycle to demonstrate and quantify the reduction of NOx emissions by reducing engine load of a drayage truck through the use of wide-single low-rolling resistance tires. If the project is successful in demonstrating significant emissions reductions, it will provide an avenue for the State of Texas to improve air quality in Houston, a non-attainment area, and reduce fuel costs for the drayage operators. The project will utilize two tractor/trailer trucks to evaluate the commercialization and emission reduction potentials of specific fuel-saving technologies as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
