Project N-011
Verification of Compact SCR System for Locomotives

Sub-Grantees:Engine, Fuel & Emissions Engineering, Inc

The proposed project would reduce emissions from an EMD F59PH passenger locomotive by retrofitting a compact urea-SCR system to the 3000 HP EMD 12-710G main propulsion engine. Emission tests would be conducted before retrofit, shortly after retrofit, after approximately 1100 hours of operation, and after one year of operation.   In addition to quantifying the emission benefits, these tests would be used to support CARB verification of the SCR system thus opening the way for future retrofits to be funded under the Carl Moyer and/or Texas Emission Reduction Programs.  Possible EPA/ETV verification would be done later on as present EPA/ETV rules are incompatible with the planned field emission testing. Funding for EPA/ETV verification would be subject to a future grant application.
