RFGA-15

Proof-of-Concept Testing to Evaluate NOx Reductions from Hydrogen Enhanced Diesel Combustion
The submission deadline for this RFGA has passed.
Open Date: April 25, 2008
Close Date: May 16, 2008
Anticipated Number of Awards: 1
Maximum Award Amount: $250,000

It is anticipated that a total of $250,000 will be awarded for a single project award. Applications are being requested for the proof-of-concept testing of hydrogen enhanced diesel combustion. Many technical solutions are being proposed to add hydrogen to the fuel air mixture in the cylinder of a diesel engine to affect diesel combustion to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. While the literature seems to support the benefits of such a concept, several questions remain:
  1. What method of hydrogen addition would provide the best balance of cost and benefits?
  2. What quantity of hydrogen, on an energy or other suitable basis, is required for appreciable benefits, particularly NOx emissions reductions?
  3. What modifications to the engine or control system, if any, would be needed to get the greatest benefit of a hydrogen enhanced diesel combustion concept?
